“Probably the best night out I've ever had at uni, and all for such a great cause!”
Frederic Rankthetank, Chairman
It’s Friday the 13th of November 2015, and a bitterly cold arctic wind whips through the Piazza on the university campus. Many deign to venture outdoors, enjoying the abundance of free heating available in their halls. But there are a few who brave the elements for a great cause. They are the Magmen, the Men’s Hockey club. They’re selling charity t-shirts in near zero temperatures to raise money for the Movember foundation in the battle against major health conditions facing men in the UK. Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity are but a few. As a well established foundation that raises awareness about such a vital issues, the Men’s Hockey club lent their time (and upper lips!) to support the Movember foundation this year.
The last month has been a difficult one for the boys. Questions have been asked over their character and ability. Some big names have failed to produce. Others have had dreams of greatness shattered through sporting some of the best examples of pre-pubescent taches in the club’s history.
Shocking facial hair aside, the (very) lightly moustachioed Magmen still managed to raise a fantastic amount for the Movember foundation. A special mention goes to clubman Chris Bradbury, who somehow raised in excess of £100 alone, alongside notable contributions from Alex Stroud and Rob McGeachie.
Fundraising efforts were culminated at Moo Bar in Leamington Spa on November 16th. The Magmen joined forces with their female counterparts, the UWLHC to host a club night in aid of Movember, aptly titled ‘Moovember’ (Ed - I see what you did there, very clever marketing). Joined by the likes of Men’s Rugby, Women’s Netball and Volleyball, a fantastic evening was had by all, whilst raising over £340 for charity. A shout out has to go to the charity secretaries for organising the event: Carly Brown, Olli Derham and Ralph Haville.
Some say this quote can be confirmed as perfectly summarising the evening: “It’s probably the best night out I’ve ever had at uni, and all for such a great cause! I get to let my hair down and look like a top bloke, brilliant!” – Frederic Rankthetank
The club’s Movember fundraising efforts are still in full swing, congratulate our awful facial hair by donating to the cause here:
