Last Friday, a total of 34 teams from all spheres of sport at Warwick University descended on the Westwood Astroturf pitches for our annual Summer Sixes tournament, sporting historical garb that ranged from prehistoric to the far flung future.
The weather was hot, the hockey was flowing and the competition was rich and varied, featuring total beginners and former youth internationals in both finals. Upsets and surprise results abounded too. The Medics' team reaching and eventually winning the final, Motorsport's dark horse Quarter Finals appearance and Cricket knocking one of our own into the plate competition for teams that finished 3rd and 4th in their groups being noted shocks.
As already mentioned, the overall winners were Dodos and Dinosaurs, the Medics Hockey team featuring former UWMHC player Henry Delacave. The Plate Winners were Kenilworth Under 8s, spearheaded by Morrison, Chris Richardson and Sid. Finally, despite very strong competition from Braveheart themed Beary Queen of Scots of Ultimate Frisbee among others, the fancy dress prize went to The Big Bang because they were still there when we remembered to give that prize out.
Most importantly though, a total of £584.50 was raised for our two chosen charities. Those being the Alzheimer's Society for the UWMHC and CoppaFeel breast cancer awareness for the UWLHC.
Thank you so much to everyone who came and played, especially those from clubs who joined us for the first time. We hope you all had a good time. Massive thank you to all others, including Tim Nunan for his photography and to the organisers, Alex Canham, Sarah McHugh, Sarah's flat, James Grammaticas for sorting the pirches, and me. I'm pretty great.
